A while ago, a friend suggested to me that I might want to write about what I’ve been learning about prayer through my experience of being a parent. Since prayer and the deepening of my relationship with God are matters that are close to my heart, and parenthood is the bulk of my daily life these days, it made sense to me to give it some thought.

Living life with an infant, I feel like I am learning afresh that love is often a discipline. The word “discipline” might come as a surprise to you. But what I mean is that love is made up of all the little choices I make throughout the day. Some of these choices are easy (like dropping everything to play with my smiling baby) but many times the choices require more effort.

Throughout this first month of motherhood, I’ve been reflecting on what I wish someone had told me about beforehand. It might not have changed anything, but I guess it would have been nice to have known some of these things.
