My wife and I both love music. This mutual appreciation for music was one of the things that attracted us to each other.

This is the story of my worst day as a father, the day I felt like a complete failure of a dad.
It was a Saturday in early July, shortly after we had moved into our new home. As was often the case, Olive and I decided we would split the parenting duties for the day. She would watch Allie in the morning while I unpacked the house. And I would watch Allie in the afternoon while she unpacked the house.
My baby is cuter than yours.
“Is it okay to say that?” I wonder to myself. Probably not. Later in the day I tell my wife that I think our baby is cuter than other babies and discover that she’s thought the exact same thing. But she agrees that it’s better not said aloud.
Yesterday I read two letters from fathers to gay sons that have been going viral.
The first letter (posted on Reddit) is from a father who disowning his son for being gay. “Don’t expect any further conversations from me. No communication at all. I will not come visit, nor do I want you in my house,” the father writes.
I always hoped I would be there to witness my baby’s first word.
It happened today. I was there.
But I missed it.
Here’s a short video of 8-month old Allie playing the egg shaker while I play the guitar. It’s her first attempt at playing the egg shaker. At times in the song she gets hungry and tries to eat the shaker (no Allie, it’s not a real egg). Right when verse 2 starts, she even switches from her left hand to her right hand. And at the beginning of the 2nd chorus, she sings along for a note.

A while ago, a friend suggested to me that I might want to write about what I’ve been learning about prayer through my experience of being a parent. Since prayer and the deepening of my relationship with God are matters that are close to my heart, and parenthood is the bulk of my daily life these days, it made sense to me to give it some thought.
